#TheSparkle | 4 Ways To Be A Happy Black Woman

September 28, 2012

I’m Happy.  I’m Black.  I’m A Woman.  Awesome! My authority on this topic has now been established. #LikeABoss

So last night was rather delightful. Happy Hour. Rooftop. NYC. And a group of AMAZING young ladies. Seriously the amount of beauty (inside and out) and energy in that space was purely divine.  Special thanks to Rosetta Thurman of Happy Black Woman for hosting and bringing all of us together. I came across Rosetta some time last year when one of her 31 Days To Reset Your Life programs was starting and followed her on Twitter. Rosetta is an “Extreme Encourager” and loves helping other people succeed. THAT is why I absolutely had to make myself available last night and meet the Woman that I clearly need to be like when I grow up!

New York City was the first stop on the HBW Fall 2012 Happy Hour Tour and I’m so happy I attended. If you missed it, don’t worry…I’m sharing 4 Ways To Be A Happy Black Woman!

#1 Sharing Is Caring

See that lady on the right, her name is Frantzie and she’s my long lost Haitian sister. We met on a social media website for Howard University Bison. Awww, HU! Any who, Frantzie is the chica that told me about Happy Hour and suggested I come. She does this often and it warms my heart every single time. To be a Happy Black Woman, you have to be like her and SHARE resources, ideas, events, etc. She does this because she operates from a place of abundance! Love Her! Now see that lady on the left, that’s Jennifer. Jennifer also keeps me in the know! She’s contacted me on several occasions letting me know about events she thought I would be interested in.  I remember years ago, she even suggested I start my own lifestyle brand…tear! Sharing is Caring my friends and these 2 lovely ladies do it well. Thankful!

**Now I’m gonna share with you. If you’re looking for a great rooftop bar for your next soiree, check out Vu Bar in K-Town. With great views and delicious drinks, you won’t be disappointed**

#2 Just Show Up

Now with Rosetta at the helm of this meeting, I already knew I was in for a good time. But who knew that would be multiplied 5 times over by just being there? Sometimes all you have to do is just Show Up. Showing up means honoring your commitments, intending on being fully present and leveraging the universe for the greater good!  All of this came to me after reconnecting with the young lady pictured. Her name is Pilin and I met her almost 6 years ago when I first moved to New York. I hadn’t seen her since, so imagine my surprise and excitement when I saw her sitting with the group. Pilin has a “light” about her that’s just kind of undeniable and it is SO fitting that her site is called IndiGlow. And then I checked out her Twitter profile! Her bio says, “I aspire to Live presently, Love fully, and Inspire others that they might find their own reason to Glow.” Umm, yes please! Pilin is a Happy Black Woman and she is Showing Up!

#3 Make New Friends

Last night, Rosetta only had one request and that was to walk away from the event with 2 new friends. I met my quota and then some! So this post doesn’t get any longer, I will only highlight 2 of them. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to get a pic with Amber but Tina is on the far right.

Miss Amber J. Adams – I first noticed her shoes, lol! They were sparkly and we all know that I get distracted by shiny things. And then I noticed her hair and her great smile. We chatted amongst our group and I was just like, “She’s going to be my friend.” In my head of course! Then little Miss Amber disappeared. I thought she was gone for the evening until I spotted her at another table on my way to the bar. I simply smiled and tilted my head. She knows why. LOL. Any who…some time later, she’s back with the group and I learn that she speaks Hindi. Say word! If you read my blog, you know that I’m coming back as Indian in my next life so this was awesome. She proceeded to give us a few quick translations and then bid us adieu. So today I checked out her blog The Fab Life Project and found out she already followed me on Twitter. Told you we would be friends!

Miss Tina – I saw her when she walked in because her hair is EVERYTHING and she’s just so cute. She looks like a baby doll! We started chatting and I learned that she’s from Cameroon and spent some time in Kenya for school. Naturally, I wanted to know more. This chica is a Youtube vlogger and vlogs about…wait for it, HAIR! #Duh Oh, but there’s more.  She even makes earrings and has an Etsy shop…Simplicity Adorned. What’s funny is when I sat next to her, she said she was just telling one of the other chicas that she feels like she’s seen me before. We went through the normal, school/work/blog checks and couldn’t figure it out. I think we were friends in another life. She has great energy and I can’t wait to connect with her again. Is there a trip to Cameroon in my future?

#4 Choose Happy

Last year, I used to greet my Twitter followers daily with the following message,”Morning Lovelies! Thoughts become things…choose the good ones.” That little gem is not my own, but comes from the daily Notes from the Universe. Choosing good thoughts takes practice, especially when things are not necessarily going our way. But to be a Happy Black Woman, you have to choose happy! I fully believe that HAPPY comes from giving of yourself, your time and your ENERGY! Actually, wow as I’m typing this…that has been a common thread in this post. All of the women I’ve highlighted are committed to living their best life. And when you’re doing that, HAPPY comes with the territory.

I am so moved and inspired by all of the Happy Black Women I met last night!  Thank you again, Rosetta. Can’t wait to reconnect/share with everyone and help support each others’ dreams. That’s #TheSparkle!

**Note** This post is Equal Opportunity and can be applied to the lives of Happy Indian, Korean, Dominican, etc. ladies or gentlemen as well. Thank you for understanding :)

Stopping by from Rosetta’s post. Just moved to the city and wish I had seen the meetup earlier – behind on blog reading after starting the new job and trying to learn my way around the city.

Sounds like it was a blast!!
